 5 Reason to go Motorised

The perception of blinds is that they are simply blinds.

I grant you, on the face of it, that might appear true BUT there is a little more to it especially now. Motorising your shading, whether that be Roller, Roman, Venetian blinds or perhaps your curtains can be seen as a piece of home technology.

From when I first started in the industry this is a bit of a revelation!!

Adding motorisation to the blinds in your roof lantern or over your new bi-folding doors can raise your home comfort, protection, convenience and beauty to whole different level.

Not a great surprise we talk to a lot of homeowners about blinds for a variety of locations, but more recently they have a heightened understanding of the benefits. Homeowners are creating more convenience turning lights, heating; TV’s on and off through electronic controls, why wouldn’t we also do the same for the window blinds?

Here are five good reasons to invest in motorized shading:

1. Convenience. Remove all that hassle of opening and closing your window blinds manually. Having powered blinds which are programmed to your favourite or most comfortable position they can be lower or raised with one touch of a button – or one stage better have them do it automatically!!

If you are thinking or have some level of home automation too wire them into that and control your blinds from your phone.

2. Energy Savings. Glazing has improved over time BUT with large panes of glass there is still solar gain on hot and sunny days. This can cause the home environment to become uncomfortable warm. Installing a light sensor that signals the motorised blinds to close when light levels get high will help keep your home at a comfortable temperature.

3. Furniture Protection. The same sunshine that makes causes solar gain also cause UV damage. Overtime UV rays can harm the upholstery on your furniture, damage pictures, hardwood floors causing them to fade over time. Motorised blinds with performance fabrics can prevent this.

4. Security. Moving blinds move up and down during the day, your house has the appearance that someone is there … even when you sunning yourself on the beach or enjoying après ski. Most control systems will allow your blinds (and the lights) to operate in a random pattern rather than on a predictable schedule, ensuring your home looks lived-in.

5. Elegance. No matter how much you try it’s tough to get the blinds into the exact position you want. Motorising them, with a touch of a button or at the programmed time they will move to the right spot. If you have several windows or coverings for your bi-fold doors every blind can move in perfect alignment.

He could be right this time – Micheal Fish that is.

He could be right this time Veteran weather forecaster Michael Fish has claimed that Britain will enjoy seven times as many scorching summer days by 2100 due to climate change. Now I know he got the hurricane forecast disastrously wrong in 1987, but as I sit here in over 30 degrees heat the thought that […]

So this is a ‘Spanish Plume’

So this is a ‘Spanish Plume’

No – it doesn’t refer to a large feather on the hat of a Spaniard, rather a catchy name for a rather complex set of meteorological conditions. It involves very warm and humid air moving up from the Spanish plateau to the UK. If this meets cooler area of air from the

Atlantic, the warm air can be forced rapidly upwards to produce thunderstorms. And that certainly is what hit my house last night. In fact one our team’s homes got a direct hit and she was lucky she only got a small jolt off the radiator she was leaning against.

What it has made me think about at home is the suitability of my blinds to block out heat and light, but allow air flow. My heavy curtains contribute to a stifling room, but the Rhino Shutters in particular allow me to leave my doors and windows open without any concerns regarding intruders (luckily more likely to be the local feral cats than burglars in our area).

My top tip in this sunshine though is to join in with your kids’ water-fight.

You might be on holiday but they’re not

You might be on holiday but they’re not

“You can tell if folk are on holiday ‘cos all the blinds are closed or there’s mail in the letterbox, papers sticking out or sometimes milk on the step. I just look through a window to see if I can see mail on the floor. If the blinds or curtains are closed a few days on the trot you know they’re away.” – a convicted burglar

Premier Blinds recommends motorising your curtain tracks and blinds incorporating timers or dawn/dusk sensors. If your blinds and curtains open and close at slightly different times each day, and your lights are also on timers it would be all but a dedicated thief who would realise that your home is empty. Great justification to your other-half for upgrading your window décor!

Are you a Goldfish?

Who would want to live in a goldfish bowl?

That’s exactly what it felt like last week when we were having our kitchen redecorated. After clearing the kitchen of clutter and taking down the blinds it amazed me how different the room felt. We only have a medium width patio door and two small windows in it, but it felt like we were living in a goldfish bowl.

At night the door especially became a great big black expanse. I felt exposed, even though we are not overlooked – and got rather a shock one night when a cat walked past peering in! The difference in acoustics (two young boys create a lot of noise) and heat loss was noticeable.

It got me thinking – with the trend towards large bi-fold doors, walls of glazing and roof lanterns in homes, it is more important than ever to dress your windows right. It is usually the summer months when glare and soaring temperatures often drive us to find a solution, but it can actually be during the winter that blinds and curtains really add benefit. You don’t have to be a Goldfish!
