Conducting light appropriately
Mr P of Croydon came to us with a request to supply and install a selection of electric wooden venetian blinds and electric black-out roller blinds in his kitchen, bedroom and living areas.
As a world renowned composer and music producer, Mr P has a lot of valuable music equipment in his home. With travelling a great deal he wanted to provide security and shading when he was away, as well as enjoying the blinds when he was at home.
Premier Blinds supplied and installed electric roller blinds and electric wood Venetian blinds. The wood Venetians were able to both tilt and raise/lower by remote control. All of the blinds operate on a timer system aligned to his interior lights, so that at 8pm every evening the blinds lower and the lights come on giving the impression of someone being at home.
Making Mum comfortable
Mrs T of Surrey approached us recently looking for a solution to help her elderly mother spend more time comfortably in her conservatory. Her house is early Victorian with the original conservatory restored to its former glory. However the glare of the sun made the conservatory unusable during the summer months.
Premier Blinds provided a practical shading solution that also suited the historic nature of the building itself. We recommended Pinoleum roof blinds as this is the material that was extensively used by the Victorians for their summer houses. Pinoleum is made from veneers and reeds woven together to form several different wood weaves. It gives a lovely soft filtered light, even on the brightest of days, creating a nice comfortable atmosphere.
To ensure Mrs T's mother could use blinds as much as possible, we automated them. By remote control the blinds can be opened and closed altogether, individually or one side at a time. The customer was absolutely overjoyed with the result - a beautiful looking conservatory roof with a very simple operation.
Making blinds simple
Premier Blinds recently completed a very satisfying project. We were asked to help a young disabled lady confined to a wheel chair but living independently in her own home. Although very capable many daily chores are still difficult for her. In particular the windows are too high for her to comfortably draw existing curtains across.
She chose electric wood Venetian blinds for the living room and black-out roller blinds for the bedroom. She wanted a contemporary look with practical means of controlling the sunlight and giving privacy.
The blinds were hard-wired as we did not want the customer worrying about the batteries in the motor or the handset running out (even with a two-year expected life). The switches were placed next to the light switches to maximise ease of use.
Saving time
Mrs L near Tonbridge has had a variety of shading solutions throughout her newly refurbished home, following a large extension.
Across the south-facing back of the house, there are three patio doors. For the door in the kitchen-breakfast room she chose Luxflex 250mm vertical blinds. These are very practical as they stack back neatly, provide shade when the sun is shining directly in the room, and make the room cosy at night. With two young children, Mrs L was worried about the chains, but the large vanes are not connected at the bottom and we fitted a child safety cleat to fix the operating cords up out of the way.
We then installed two 89mm verticals at the other two patio doors. These rooms are used less, but by having the same fabric for all three blinds the look from the outside is consistent. The blinds are there mainly to provide shade to stop the furniture and flooring from fading. In front of the vertical blind in the lounge Mrs L has a curtain on an electric track. The dawn/dusk sensor automatically pulls the curtains closed at night and open in the morning.
In the kitchen, the two small windows are dressed with roman blinds, and behind these are battery operated roller blinds – both in co-ordinating fabric to match the vertical blinds.
All these solutions are beautiful additions to Mrs L’s home, and have practical and time-saving operations added on.
Bi-fold doors are increasingly popular for extensions and new builds. However, they present an interesting shading conundrum - heat, glare and privacy all need a solution.
Many people have chosen bi-fold doors to maximise the light and external views from their room. The last thing they want to do is put up curtains or blinds that block the light or reduce the minimalistic design. We can help.
If you have thought about dressing the window before you have even built the door, electric roller blinds in hidden roof cassettes are fabulous. If not, we recommend automated curtain tracks, Luxaflex Silhouettes, sliding panel blinds or 250mm vertical panes.
